Industry Fast Facts
According to UNICEF, more than 1.1 billion people worldwide don't have access to safe drinking water. Another 2.6 billion lack adequate sanitation. The result is devastating. Every day, 5,000 people who share our planet die from water-related illnesses, nearly 2 million each year, and the vast majority of these are children. Epidemics of cholera, dysentery and hepatitis are common, diseases that can be traced directly to water or sanitation. (Source: www.awwa.org).

Due to organizations like AWW&WEA that are working to advance knowledge in the areas of design, construction, operation and management of utilities in order to provide water and water pollution control service to the public, these statistics are going down.

There are approximately 170,000 public water systems in the United States. EPA classifies these water systems according to the number of people they serve, the source of their water, and whether they serve the same customers year-round or on an occasional basis.
